Set against a spectacular alpine backdrop, the train travels east through the Upper Rhône Valley, climbing to 1,366 m at Oberwald, passing Andermatt, and crossing the Oberalp Pass at 2,034 m — the highest point of the journey. The route then descends through the Rhine Valley to Chur at 595 m, the lowest point on the line. Particularly dramatic scenery awaits in the Rhine Gorge between Ilanz and Reichenau.
